There's something for everyone at St. Mary's Institute

ArtArt at SMI is unique! No traveling art-on-a-cart here. Our art studio is fully stocked with supplies and materials and is accessible to all students. Our art teacher develops community by having all students participate in creating art for SMI concerts and fundraisers. Recently, the Snowflake Project had students make individual snowflakes to decorate the cafeteria and gymnasium. Like snowflakes, students are uniquely special.

Without music, the world would B-flat! Get it? At St. Mary’s, all students, young and old, participate in weekly music classes and the chorus delights us with their vocal talents at Liturgy, concerts, and other school and community events. Each spring, they kick-off baseball season by singing the National Anthem at the Amsterdam Mohawks home game.

BandThe Paul Effman music program offers musical instruction of the trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute, bells, drums, trombone, and even the glockenspiel in a small, student-centered environment during the school day. Students from grades 3-8 can participate in this program, as well as rent instruments for a nominal fee.

St. Mary’s has competitive soccer and basketball teams for girls and boys at the middle school level. Teams are coached by volunteer teachers or parents. Many students participate and work together to help build a strong school spirit. This causes the students to grow as a healthy community with discipline, respect, sportsmanship, and leadership.

Student Council

As the voice of the student body, our student council runs from grades 4-8 and works throughout the year to provide a memorable, fun school year. For example, they participate in Breast Cancer Awareness, Muscular Dystrophy shamrocks sale, and organizing school dances, to name a few.

Students can learn while realizing their ambitions and interests through the assortment of clubs St. Mary’s has to offer. Whether offering a spirited counterpoint in debate club, perfecting a monologue in drama club, or challenging a peer to a friendly game in chess club, children at SMI can discover what they enjoy doing most and perhaps what they would like to be when they reach adulthood.
